UNC Bears, Air Force, and Colorado Claw To Top of the CFRL

December 18, 2019

Move over Colorado, you have company at the top of Cracker’s Front Range League.

The Bears of the University of Northern Colorado completed their CFRL schedule in a whirlwind week that featured a pair of 20+ point victories.

On Saturday, the Bears visited the Pimple on the Prairie and dismantled the host Cowboys of WYO. The visitors led by only 4 at the half but overwhelmed the home team by a 36-19 margin in the second stanza as they strolled to a 74-53 victory. Senior guard Jonah Radebaugh, the reigning Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year, led the way with 24 points and effectively controlled the Pokes’ leaders Hunter Maldonado on the other side of the floor.

It was WYO’s fifth straight loss under marginally embattled and beleaguered head coach Allen Edwards. With the loss, they moved to 0-2 in the CFRL and their hopes of a league title and the coveted trophy were dashed.

On Tuesday night, the Bears hosted the Pioneers of Denver in Greeley and the outcome was never in doubt as the Bears led by double digits at halftime and continued the onslaught in the second half to post an 86-64 win.

The Bears were led once again by the aforementioned Radebaugh who staked an early claim to the CFRL POY with a 26 point, 5 rebound, 6 assist, 4 steal stat line.

In other CFRL games, Colorado scored a pivotal win at Colorado State and Air Force followed up an MWC/CFRL win at Wyoming with a 79-75 win at Denver

Current Standings

Northern Colorado 2-0

Colorado 2-0

Air Force 2-0

Colorado State 1-1

Denver 0-3

Wyoming 0-3

Other Stuff

As mentioned earlier, Wyoming’s Allen Edwards is rapidly approaching embattled and beleaguered status and his future in Laramie is certainly in question. I think the Pokes will look south and east about 100 miles for their next leader. UNC’s Jeff Linder has built a pretty solid program on a shoestring budget.

I attribute UNC’s CFRL success this season to the addition of Dorian Green to Linder’s coaching staff. Dorian was an amazing 23-5 in CFRL games in his four years at Colorado State. He knew the importance of the Salma photo, the Cusano cigar, and the cheese ball trophy and its obvious he has helped players like Jonah Radebaugh understand the gravity of it all.
