Colorado State 74 – Nevada 56 (Women)

February 28, 2016

The Rams returned home after a successful pair of games on the road in Laramie and AlbyQ to face lower-level Nevada, a squad they had defeated in Reno 64-37 earlier in the year.

It figured to be a bit of a laugher.

It wasn’t for the first 25 minutes as the Lady Wolf Pack scrapped their way inside and the Rams struggled with turnovers and missed open looks.

The first 20 minutes were pretty much the Keyora Wharry and Ellen Nystrom show as Wharry scored at the rim and Nystrom passed the Rams to easy buckets.  A late run by the Rams sent them into the halftime locker room leading by 8. Wharry had scored 13 and Nystrom had 9 assists.

The second half started much the same as the first and the Rams held a 9-point lead halfway through the 3rd quarter.  They had slowly been ratcheting up the defensive pressure and finally caught the Wolf Pack in a vulnerable position with starters on the bench.

The onslaught was fueled by fantastic full court defense and some individual offensive streaks.  First it was Jamie Patrick with 5 in a row. Then sub Veronika Mrkovic with 4. Then Elie Gustavsson with a pair of steals in the backcourt threat led to layups, the second of which came with a free throw.  Over the final 5 minutes the Rams had outscored the visitors by 21-3 and led 64-37.

Coach Ryun Williams pulled his starters and rode his bench for most of the 4th quarter.  Not the prettiest of finishes but it provided valuable rest with the next game coming with one less day of rest than normal.  Wharry and Patrick finished with 15 each and Gustavsson with 13. Mrkovic scored 7 off the bench.

The Rams had pushed their record to 26-1, 16-0 and clinched a tie for the MWC regular season crown, their 3rd consecutive. It was also their 23rd consecutive win and their 14th consecutive at home.

Next up is Fresno State, who are 14-2 in the MWC and the biggest threat to put a stop to all streaks.  Not only a great game but Senior Night on top of it.

It doesn’t get any better!
