Colorado State 62 – Air Force 42 (Women)

January 11, 2015

As a fan, this was one of those games where you knew the team you follow was going to take care of business. Not just because they were better but because you knew they would be prepared by their coaching staff.

And so Air Force rolled out to an early 5-0 lead and the Lady Rams were looking a bit out of sorts as their leader and point guard Gritt Ryder was on the bench nursing a serious hamstring injury.

In came senior guard AJ Newton who was making her first appearance at Moby in nearly two months after suffering a serious injury to her knee that required surgery.

She scored a driving and-1 and followed with a mid range jumper to get the Rams going.

My only thought was …AJ is back. Not 100% back physically but her energy, shooting skills, and overall unselfishness were a sight for sore eyes.

CSU broke the game open late in the half with a 15-point run and the outcome was never in doubt. Balanced scoring with Hanne Mestdagh, Alana Arias, Elie Gustavsson, and Ellen Nystrom all in double figures.

The Rams got Gritt Ryder rested, starters didnt’t have to play lots of minutes, they rested defensively in a 2-3 zone for the entire game, and AJ Newton got lots of needed run. It was win-win all around.

Other thoughts….

I’m a huge Springsteen fan.

Huge.

So when AJ took the court, these lyrics jumped into my head…

Who’s that down in the alley?
She’s been gone so long
Here she comes, here she comes,
Here she comes, here she comes…

Kitty’s back in town!

Sorry AJ. I might have to call you Kitty one of these days!
