Wyoming 60 – Colorado State 54

January 8, 2015

With a poke, poke, here and a poke, poke there, Wyoming strolled into Moby Gym and walked away with a hard-earned win over the slumping Colorado State Rams.

The Cowboys jumped out early on a pair of Josh Adams breakaway layups off CSU turnovers and never looked back. The Rams managed to tie the game twice but never led as Wyoming hit key shots and free throws down the stretch. The Rams closed the margin to 1 several times in the first half after Wyoming had pushed their second half lead to 12 but could never make the play they needed to get their nose in front.

The key play…

A Larry Eustachy technical foul late in the first half right when the Rams were on an 8-2 run to tie the game. A loss of momentum. Wyoming made the subsequent free throws, then ran off 12 to end the first half and begin the second half.

The refs might not have been having a good game. Its hard enough for a team to play 5 against 8. But they sure as hell don’t need to play 5 against 9 either.

But its not all on the coach. Its on a team that shot 35% from the field, including 2-14 from beyond the arc. Its on a team that turned the ball over 16 times leading to several easy runouts and layups for Wyoming. Its on a team that struggled to make 2 consecutive free throws as they were fighting their way back.

In the end, a Wyoming team of players, the core of whom have played together through 3 or 4 MWC seasons showed a bunch of transfers what it takes to win an important Mountain West game against a rival. The Cowboys refused to lose from the opening whistle. They were prepared and they executed. They came into a tough environment and flat out won the game by making tough plays when it mattered.

With the loss, the Rams moved to 1-2 in the Mountain West Conference. Next up is Air Force at Colorado Springs. We’ll learn a lot about where this team is headed on Saturday.

Go to bed. At least you don’t live in Lincoln.
