Colorado State 68 – Air Force 56

February 9, 2014

I never blog games I haven’t attended. Watching on TV (or a computer replay in this case) is not quite the same as being there.

But I can’t help but comment on a few things.

First, that was a vintage Larry Eustachy road win. Good defense and lot of rebounds. The 47-17 advantage on the glass was astounding. Even more astounding was that the Rams did it by playing zone D for the majority of the game.

Zone D?

They probably haven’t played 3 minutes of zone in total since Eustachy came to Fort Collins last season. And according to someone on staff, it’s the most his teams have played in the last three years.

Talk about rolling the dice!

It was an amazing coaching move that allowed them to creep back into the game after trailing by 10 and looking dead in the water. Slowly the offense came around as JJ Avila had his way in the paint either finishing at the rim or delivering quality passes for easy finishes.

And then there was the final 4 minutes.

Tied at 52, the Rams finished the game off better than any other this season as Jon Octeus took control to lead the Rams on a 16-4 spurt. Once they got into the lead, they never looked nervous or threatened..

And with the victory, the Rams delivered the I-25 season sweep over the conference rival Falcons.

That sure feels good.
