New Mexico 68 – Colorado State 66

January 26, 2014

It was an exciting game.

Made exciting because CSU cannot shoot the basketball.

32% from the field. And they only lost by 2?

Are you frigging kidding me?

The Lobos were ripe for the taking. They were missing big center Alex Kirk, negating the advantage they had in the post. They still had two All conference level performers in power forward Cameron Bairstow and guard Kendall Williams. And a veteran guard in Hugh Greenwood. Williams and Bairstow combined for 42 points on 14-28 shooting from the field. Greenwood made a pair of three pointers late in the game that proved to be killers.

But this one is on the Rams who can’t shoot.

They out rebounded the Lobos, they had more points in the paint, they had more points off turnovers, they had fewer turnovers. But in the grand scheme of things they cam up two points short.

Because they can’t shoot.

They are 308th in the nation in Effective Field Goal Percentage out of 350 teams.

All you have to do is watch them in warmups. Most teams will make 8 or 10 in a row during warmups. The Rams will miss 8 or 10 in a row.

I’m not gonna stop coming to games. I’m gonna keep on cheering your you and keep hammering on the refs. But if you want to win some games, you need to start making some fucking shots!

Because you sure aren’t making enough to win.

one final thought…

Daniel Bejarano is awesome. He had 21 points and 7 rebounds. He doesn’t make all of his shots but at least he makes some. And he hustles on defense. And when he makes tough shots and gets knocked the floor, he pops right back up and sprints down the floor to defend. He hates being called out individually for good performances. He is all about the team and winning. His shooting has gotten better as the season has gone on. It’s time for the other guys to find the time to start to care as much as Daniel. Because they (other than Joe DeCiman) sure as hell can’t shoot at a level that can win games at the MWC Level.
