Boise State 78 – Colorado State 65

March 4, 2013

The Rams led 36-34 at the half.

Boise State’s Derrick Marks scored 33 points in the second half and led the Broncos to a big victory.

It’s the type of individual performance that has happened before and will happen again.

Here’s a write-up of a game I was fortunate enough to attend back in the day.

The highlight of Gary Melchionni’s career came in February 1973, his senior year, when Duke hosted 3rd-ranked Maryland. Lefty Driesell’s Terps were loaded that year with Tom McMillen, Len Elmore, and John Lucas. Melchionni out-quicked the big guys, overpowered the quick guys, and baffled the Terps all night. He ended up with 39 points for the game on 17-25 shooting from the field and 5-6 from the free throw line. Duke pulled off the 85-81 upset. At one point in the game, Melchionni scored 11 points on 5 possessions over a 2:20 period, each time taking the ball to the hoop for a score.

Three decades later, Melchionni recalled, “Maryland never adjusted. I can’t believe they let me score that many. Maybe they were just stubborn.”
