Today in MWC Hoops (2-23-13)

February 23, 2013

1-1 again!

I feel like I’m missing free throws down the stretch and leaving The Chimp way too many opportunities to get back into this contest. And its my own fault. I haven’t been using my non-gameday time to sharpen my routine. I haven’t come home fatigued at night and made picks of other games. I haven’t turned up the volume of the TV set and made picks under duress.

You reap what you sow. I’m now 23-21 for the season.

My win was with Boise over Air Force as the Broncos shot their way to an easy double-digit win over the visiting Falcons. Boise State had their most efficient offensive outing of the season against a D-1 opponent as they averaged nearly 1.3 points per possession. Anthony Drmic and Jeff Elorriaga combined for 40 points with 8 made 3’s. AFA’s Michael Lyons injured his thumb in the first half and returned to earth with a 10 point performance.

My loss was taking UNLV at home over CSU. The Rebels were hot early but the Rams were in position to win late after grinding their way back to a 2-point lead. The Rams couldnt get a key stop or rebound i nthe final two minutes and when Anthony Marshall nailed an elbow jumper, the Rebs had scored a famous two-point win with CSU getting in under the number.

Today’s Games

New Mexico @ Colorado State (-6) – This game will go a long way toward deciding the MWC title as the Lobos invade Fort Collins. The Lobos bring great defense and physical play against a CSU the defends, rebounds, and scores at a higher rate than any other MWC team. In the first meeting, UNM ran out to a big second-half lead before the Rams cut the margin to 3 with a furious rally. Look for the Rams to turn the table on the scoreboard but for the Lobos to get it home under the number.

Nevada-Las Vegas @ Wyoming (+2.5) – I don’t know what the deal is with UNLV. Great at home, competitive on the road against the top MWC teams, and absolute shlubs on the road when they play an MWC bottom feeder. I’m a great believer in past performance as a predictor. And Wyoming certainly falls into the bottom feeder category after a blowout loss at San Diego State on Tuesday moved their conference record to 4-8. Take the Pokes and the points and watch them win outright over the UNLV Runnin’ Schlubs.

Boise State @ Fresno State (+2) – Funny match-up. On paper Boise looks a lot better than the Bulldogs. But they don’t play very good D and thats what wins on the road. The Broncos rely on perimeter shooting and Fresno defends the 3-ball really well. It should be low-scoring, 50-50 game. I know Boise is in the hunt for an NCAA at-large and are highly motivated but I think the best pick is the Bulldogs and the points. Warning: The Surgeon General has determined that betting on Fresno State is grounds to get you admitted to Bellevue Hospital for psychiatric observation.

Nevada @ San Diego State (-13.5) – San Diego State good. Nevada not so good. SDSU still with an outside chance to get to the top of the MWC. Nevada playing apathetic ball. Take the Aztecs and lay the points.
