Today in MWC Hoops (1-26-13)
Crushed by The Chimp on Wednesday as I missed on all 3 games, moving my season record to 10-9. For those of you that don’t know about The Chimp, the odds of a chimpanzee picking a game against the spread is 50%.
The first time I heard it used was way back in high school. I went to high school in New York and they had an exam there called the Regents’ Exam. High scores on the exam would lead to a scholarship at any of the state universities. The exam consisted of 300 multiple choice questions on all subjects. Each question had 4 possible answers.
We were sitting in home room when we got our test results. Of course people were comparing scores. One guy revealed he had scored a 70. At which point someone turned to him and said “70! Heck, a chimpanzee would have scored a 75!”
The birth of The Chimp.
The Chimp who beat my ass on Wednesday.
New Mexico @ San Diego State (-4.5) – The Aztecs with their backs to the wall. Two losses in conference already and a loss here would severely damage any conference championship hopes. They have struggled to score consistently since the injury to guard Xavier Thames. And today they face the MWC’s best defensive team in New Mexico. The spread seems like an awful lot. I’ll take the Lobos.
Air Force @ Wyoming (-7.5) – Wyoming struggling a bit since the Luke Martinez suspension. A road game at UNLV on Thursday and a 2-day turnaround to get ready for a tricky AFA team that a few of the Pokes have not really played. Air Force has played well with the exception of the hammering at CSU. They were able to steal a win in Laramie last season. The same could happen today. Take the Falcons and the points.
Boise State @ Nevada (+1.5) – Boise has been a little inconsistent in conference play, partly because of their weak defending and partly because of injury (Jeff Elorriaga) and suspension. Nevada go their first MWC win last Saturday at Fresno and then followed it up with 20 good minutes against SDSU and 20 terrible minutes. Are the Wolf Pack ready to get their disappointing season turned around? Not today. Take Boise and lay the points.
Colorado State @ Fresno State (+7.5) – The Rams as road favorites? They won their first two road games but have subsequently lost 4 on in a row. Big match-up advantage on the boards for the Rams if they don’t get careless with the ball. The big number is a little scary but the Rams are the play here.
