Illinois-Chicago 64 – Colorado State 55

December 9, 2012

An emotional loss to archival Colorado the other night. A bit of an underrated team in Illinois-Chicago that had lost only one game all year. A roadie to Chicago. A tough game for sure.

But what was to ensue was not good. Because the Rams actually played pretty much the game that is preached by Coach Larry Eustachy. They defended hard, holding their opponent to 38% shooting from the field and only 33% from the perimeter. They ourebounded the Flames 41-22. An incredible +19 on the glass.

And yet the Rams lost by 9.

Because they couldn’t get easy points out of Center Colton Iverson and couldn’t get anything going with any of their perimeter players. Part of it was the tenacious defense played by UIC. Part of it was poor shooting by CSU. And part of it was complete incompetence when the Rams were faced with a 2-3 zone.

With the loss the Rams fell to 6-2. There should be no talk of post-season tournament play right now. There is lots of work to do on the offensive side of the ball. Whether it is against man-to-man or zone defenses, the Rams are struggling right now to develop any kind of consistency.

Last year the Rams stood at 4-4 after 8 games. They were coming off of losses at Northern Iowa and Duke as they entered final exams. They got Pierce Hornung back from injury and immediately went on an 8-game winning streak.

There’s lots of work left to do. For the players. And the coaches.
