No NCAA Tourney for Denver in 2014 or 2015

November 13, 2012

Something I look forward to every few years are early round NCAA Tournament games at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Some great games have been seen here over the years with the most recent being a Kenneth Faried led upset of Louisville by Morehead State, a Richmond upset of Vanderbilt, a Gonzaga thrashing of St. Johns, and a Jimmer Fredette outburst to send BYU into the Sweet Sixteen.

So when the NCAA announced the sites for the tournament ib the years 2014 and 2015 and Denver was nowhere to be found, you can understand my disappointment. Denver has always sold out faster than other sites and has been the site with the fewest no-shows so it wasn’t an attendance problem.

I wondered if the MWC, CSU, and/or Air Force were not interested in playing hosts like they had in recent years. So I asked a good source at the Mountain West what the deal was and here was his response.

Good morning. Pepsi Center did submit a bid, but was not awarded the opportunity for 2014 or 2015. The city has hosted three championships in the past five years (2008 and 2011 men’s, 2012 Women’s Final Four) and I believe the NCAA likely wanted to rotate the tournament around. The next opportunity is 2016.

Looks like we missed out because of the women.

Oh well. Maybe 2016.
