The Return of Pierce Hornung

December 20, 2011

So let’s see if I can paint a picture.

CSU defeated Texas Southern 85-61 tonight at Moby. The teams traded baskets for the first couple of minutes. And then Pierce Hornung was inserted into the game at about the 17:30 mark. It was his first action since suffering a concussion early in the first half at Stanford in mid-November.

On his first possession, Hornung deflected a ball that resulted in a steal. He then grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on a putback. He followed that with a blocked shot and defensive rebound on the next two defensive possessions and then scored on another putback after another offensive rebound. After two minutes on the floor he had 4 points, 3 rebounds, 1 block, and 1 deflection that resulted in a steal. Two minutes of instant impact from last year’s MWC 6th Man of the Year and the game was turned for good in the Rams favor.

Pierce would end the game with 7 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block in about 20 minutes of action. Throw in a career-high tying 25 from Wes Eikmeier, 15 from Dorian Green, and 13 from Greg Smith and all of a sudden the Rams look like a team that is deep and can play both ends of the floor.

Texas Southern played zone for all but about one possession of the game and CSU absolutely tortured them with their zone offense. Lots of perimeter firepower from Wes Eikmeier and Dorian Green but the real key are the three players that can deliver when they get the ball inside the zone at the free throw line – Hornung, Dwight Smith, and Greg Smith. They all have unique shooting, passing, and penetrating skills that are difficult to defend.

Pierce is a beast inside. Having to play without him for month has strengthened the team as a whole now that he has returned.
