Friday Night in the MWC (and some other games of interest)

November 18, 2011

All MWC teams other than UNLV are in action on Friday and Saturday and there are some other games of interest as well.

TCU vs. Virginia (-9.5)  – an opening round game at the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands.  With the name of the tourney being a jam, does that mean that the only baskets that count are jams.  Or will there be a bunch of musicians getting together to perform while the games are being played?  Is jam in this case short for jamboree?  Is there a new Smuckers flavor named Paradise?  Lots of questions.  Just like there are with TCU who have yet to play a serious opponent.  Virginia is coached by Tony Bennett.  Let’s hope the Frogs don’t leave their hearts in Fort Worth cuz they can’t win on talent alone.  Bet this game at your own risk.  4:00pm mst.

New Mexico  (-4.5)@ Arizona State – Both squads are off to inauspicious starts.  The Bobos lost at home to in-state rival New Mexico State and looked to be lost without Dairese Gary running the point.  Arizona State lost at home to Pepperdine.  Herb Sendek is sitting on a very hot seat right now.  As bad as the Sun Devils are, I like home dogs this time of year.  Take the Sun Devils and the points.

Western State (Colo.) @ Air Force – If you see a couple of white vans on the road with large orange Gatorade containers on the luggage racks, the odds are it’s the Western State squad heading to their next road beat down.  Last week they were spotted on Shields Street in Fort Collins on their way to Laramie.  Today its the Flyboys.  Wyoming beat them by about 100.  Air Force will do the same.

Other games of interest tonight include:

Colorado vs. Maryland – a losers bracket matchup in Puerto Rico as CU is coming off a loss to Wichita State and Maryland was blown out by a solid Alabama squad.  Buff coach Tad Boyle and Terp coach Mark Turgeon are very familiar with each other.  They coached together at Wichita State and coached against each other in the Big 12 last year.  It’s an intriguing matchup because the coaches are very familiar with their opponents style of play.  We’ll see which teaM can get it figured out with only a day to prepare.  CU is worth keeping a eye on in the near term because they play @ AFA on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and @CSU the Wednesday after Thanksgiving.

Longwood @ BYU –  Brandon Davies returns from suspension due to an honor code violation and the Cougars schedule a team named Longwood?  Are you kidding me?

Tomorrow’s games include:

Cal State Northridge @ Boise State Boise, Idaho  – 1:00 p.m. mst
Long Beach State @ San Diego State – 1:30 p.m. pet
Southern Miss @ Colorado State – 7:00 p.m. mst
Wyoming @ Green Bay – 7:00 p.m. Cst
TCU vs. Drexel/Norfolk State – TBA
