Today in MWC Hoops (1-19-13)
Another 2-2 effort on Wednesday to move my season record to 8-4. The winners were CSU and UNLV and the losers were Boise State and Wyoming.
First the losses.
New Mexico fell behind by as much as 9 in the first half at Boise but roared back. One thing about the Lobos. You may build a lead on them but they respond with urgency when it happens. They managed to get the game into OT and then built a nice lead before Boise made it a game again. An Anthony Dmric three-ball miss after a steal was the last hope for the Broncos.
Wyoming has their bodies invaded by the ghosts of Neil Daugherty’s TCU teams. You know what I’m talking about…teams that can’t put the ball in the ocean, let alone a hoop. The Bulldogs scored their first MWC victory ever and the Pokes fell to 1-2, looking like the Luke Martinez suspension will prove to be a fatal blow to their season.
As for the wins, Colorado State rolled to their biggest MWC win in their history with a 39-point laugher over Air Force. The Rams won their 23rd straight home game in the process which set a new school record.
UNLV won a huge road game at San Diego State and really impressed down the stretch as they made clutch bucket after clutch bucket. I gotta come clean. I didnt think the Rebels would win. Just thought they’d cover the spread.
Boise State @ Air Force (+3.5) – Lots of good shooters in this game for both teams. But the best penetrator for both teams is Boise’s Derrick Marks. Will he be able to do his thing against Air Force’s multiple zone defenses? And will it be enough to cover the 3.5? Heck if I know so I’ll take the Falcons based on nothing but the fact that they are a home underdog.
Nevada-Las Vegas @ Colorado State (-3.5) – Both these teams rebound the ball pretty well and it looks like this one could be a bloodbath on the glass. I’m playing a hunch and going with CSU in this one. Mostly because of how well they typically play at home. Take CSU and give the points.
San Diego State @ Wyoming (+2) – Until Wyoming proves they can play without Luke Martinez and beat a good team, I would stay away from them. Xavier Thames is hurt and that hurts the Aztecs a lot. He helps them spread the floor with his steady perimeter shooting. Even so, Take the Aztecs.
Nevada @ Fresno State (-4) – Old WAC rivals face off in their first MWC contest. I see nothing in Nevada that would leave me to believe they can actually go to Fresno and win. I see something in Fresno that tells me that they could lose because they shoot the ball so bad. Firs team to 40 will win this one. I’m going with the home team and hope that the Bulldogs make some free throws in the end game to cover the 4 points. Dawgs!
